The little boy wrapped both arms around his mother’s coffin.
“I don’t want her to be alone.”
His voice was barely louder than a whisper.
The church fell completely silent.
People lowered their heads.
Several guests quietly wiped away tears.
A woman in the front pew stepped forward.
“Sweetheart…”
“We have to let your mommy rest.”
The six-year-old shook his head.
“No.”
“If they close it…”
“I’ll never see her again.”
Even the funeral director looked away.
The boy reached into his tiny backpack.
He pulled out a crumpled birthday card.
It had been folded so many times the edges had begun to tear.
“My mommy said…”
“If anything ever happened to her…”
“I should give this to my daddy.”
The church grew still.
An elderly aunt sighed.
“Poor child.”
“He never knew his father.”
The boy looked around the room.
“Then where is he?”
No one answered.
Just as the funeral director reached for the coffin…
The heavy wooden doors opened.
A tall man stood in the entrance, breathing hard.
His suit was soaked from the rain.
His eyes were locked on the little boy.
Then he spoke.
“Because…”

“I’ve been looking for my son for six years.”
No one moved.
The boy slowly turned toward the stranger.
“You know my daddy?”
The man’s eyes filled with tears.
“I am your daddy.”
Gasps echoed through the church.
The elderly aunt immediately stepped between them.
“Don’t you dare.”
“You abandoned Emily before he was born.”
The man slowly shook his head.
“I never even knew she was pregnant.”
Silence.
He reached into his wallet.
Inside was an old engagement photo.
He and Emily were smiling in front of a small lakeside cabin.
On the back, in Emily’s handwriting, were the words:
Forever begins today.
The aunt’s face changed.
She recognized the photo immediately.
“It can’t be…”
The man swallowed.
“Emily disappeared the week before our wedding.”
“I searched for her.”
“I hired private investigators.”
“I filed missing person reports.”
“For years.”

He looked at the coffin.
“I only found out she had died three days ago.”
The little boy quietly walked toward him.
“If you’re my daddy…”
“Why didn’t Mommy ever tell me your name?”
The man couldn’t answer.
Instead…
The elderly aunt lowered her head.
“There is something…”
“Emily begged me never to tell either of you.”
The aunt slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“Emily wasn’t hiding from you.”
“She was hiding from your father.”
The church fell silent again.
The man frowned.
“My father?”
She nodded.
“He owned the company where Emily worked.”
“When she became pregnant…”
“He offered her money to disappear.”
“When she refused…”
“He threatened to destroy your future.”
Emily left town without telling anyone.
Not because she stopped loving you.
But because she believed your father would ruin your life if she stayed.
The man stared at the coffin.
Tears rolled down his face.
“My father told me…”
“Emily had chosen someone else.”
The aunt opened a small envelope Emily had left behind.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
“If you’re reading this…”
“It means our son finally knows the truth.”
“I never stopped loving his father.”
“I only wanted both of them to have a life free from fear.”
The little boy quietly took the man’s hand.
“So…”
“You didn’t leave us?”
The man fell to his knees.
“Not for a single day.”
Months later…
After DNA testing confirmed the truth…
The father was granted custody of his son.
On the first Mother’s Day they spent together…
They visited Emily’s grave.
The little boy placed fresh white lilies beside the headstone.
Then looked up at his father.
“Mommy kept her promise.”
“What promise?”
“She said…”
“When the time was right…”
“My dad would always find me.”
For the first time in six years…
He finally had.
